The Necromancers Tale Review

Becoming That Which Is Feared
The Necromancer’s Tale is a top-down CRPG game created by Psychic Software, set in an alternative history of a town between Venice and the Adriatic Sea, in the 1800s. You play a character that you create through an interactive story, or if you wish to skip that option, you can go right into the stat menu and create your unique character. The main story is when your father dies mysteriously, and you return to a broken home. Your mother is losing herself, and your family’s finances are in ruin. You work hard to recover your family's wealth and uncover the truth about what truly happened to your father.
The overall narrative of the story is clear and straight forward. The gothic tone of the 1800s gives it a unique feeling that many games struggle with. Almost as if I'm playing a game based on the stories from Edgar Allen Poe or Nathaniel Hawthorne. It's how it takes you to the final moments of the game that really sink you into this gothic world. You will uncover secrets and learn dark magic to get what you want. All while trying to keep it a secret from everyone. You have to build trust and learn ways to get what you need from other NPCs. The dialogue between you and the characters guide you to what you need to do.
How you end up doing it is up to you. There have been times where I completed an objective to gather what I needed only to later talk to a NPC and realize they could have given me what I wanted if I had done their small side quest. Side quests for NPCs usually consist of fetching an item they want or helping them achieve a goal that could be in your interest as well. There have been times where I forgot what I had to get and the journal in game only gave me minor details. I had to go back to a NPC and get the dialogue I needed. This is somewhat tedious and I wish they could add a chat log to scroll through your previous dialogue. Same with hints when the game gives you them. Sometimes they appear in your corner, but I would oftentimes get distracted by an NPC moving weirdly and realize I missed the hint. With no way of finding that hint or instruction, I sometimes find myself just messing with the UI until something happens. The UI itself is not a problem, since it's similar to games like Diablo or Path of Exile. You won’t need much to learn where things are and how to equip them.
Fight The Darkness With Darkness
Combat for this game can be exciting. Having the game turn into a hexagon shaped turn based match. The controls and knowledge of future abilities are easy to use. There is an option where you can skip combat encounters and the game will calculate your stats and figure out if you will come victorious or lose. Through a few tries the outcomes can vary. I do enjoy going through combat myself, I have more confidence in myself finding solutions to problems. The combat skip option is great for those that don’t want to spend more time fighting and explore the rich town Psychic Software has created.
Graphically the game is good. There have been times where I load into a map and the entire map is one blur. Give it a few seconds and the graphics adjust. I didn’t encounter that problem much. The majority of the glitches I encountered were the NPCs themselves. I would go hug a friend, walk away only to see them in my map stuck in the hugging animation. If the NPC is set to follow me, they would glide around stuck in the animation they were put in. Recent patches have fixed that issue but there are still some that remain.
Overall The Necromancer’s Tale is a game that will scratch that gothic itch. With its story, soundtrack and style. I enjoyed my time diving into the world Psychic Software created. Becoming a powerful Necromancer and using my army to achieve my goals.
