Castlevania: Belmont's Curse — Everything You Need to Know

Developer/Publisher: Evil Empire & Motion Twin (advisory) / Konami |

The Story |
It's 1499. Paris is on fire — not metaphorically — monstrous creatures have flooded the streets and the city is losing. Trevor Belmont gets the call, and instead of rolling solo, he passes the legendary Vampire Killer whip to his daughter Rose and sends her in. That's your setup. You're playing as Rose Belmont — daughter of Trevor and Sypha Belnades — fighting her way through a burning Medieval Paris and the dark halls of a looming castle to figure out what's behind the invasion and stop it before it consumes everything. The game is set 23 years after Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse (1989) in the original game timeline — and yes, that means this is a direct game sequel, not a continuation of the Netflix anime. The France setting and the Trevor-and-Sypha family tree are shared, but this story operates entirely in-game canon. Important distinction that the internet has been getting wrong.

The Breakdown |
The pedigree on this one is genuinely hard to argue with. Evil Empire and Motion Twin — the team behind Dead Cells — are leading development with Konami in an advisory and publishing role. Their Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania crossover DLC was basically an audition for this, and Konami handed them the keys. That's either a bold bet or the smartest thing the publisher has done in a decade. Probably both. |
What's confirmed so far: 2D Metroidvania-style action, exploration-driven combat, tarot-based Arcana skills, whip mechanics built for speed and mobility (think trapeze artist, not just cracking things), and a gothic aesthetic rooted in the series' classic 2D entries. Historical figures show up as corrupted enemies — Joan of Arc was spotted in an April trailer — so the lore nerds are already eating. This is also the first traditional 2D Castlevania in the original timeline since Order of Ecclesia in 2008. Sixteen years. Let that sink in. |

Rose Belmont is also a franchise first worth acknowledging — the first female Belmont to lead a mainline Castlevania game since Sonia Belmont's entry was scrubbed from canon. She's carrying a lot of legacy weight on those braids, and everything shown so far suggests Evil Empire is treating that seriously. October 15th is right in Castlevania's wheelhouse — two weeks before Halloween, a franchise that bleeds gothic horror. The timing is deliberate and it's perfect. This is on the radar. Until next time, GZ fans! |
