GZ Show Grade: A / A+
A strong lineup top to bottom. Sony showed up with volume and substance. The fall 2026 slate they assembled in a single 60-minute block is genuinely intimidating. Xbox better be watching.
Big 3 Takes
Most Exciting Announcement
Marvel's Wolverine — Insomniac Games
Insomniac went and actually did it. This was a strong gameplay showcase that genuinely earns the Wolverine mantle — high-action, gritty combat, and a design that screams this isn't a Spider-Man palette swap. Logan is brutal, fast, and relentless, and the gameplay loop looks like it was built specifically around making you feel the weight of those claws. The PS5-exclusive lock is Sony drawing a line in the sand at exactly the right moment, right before GTA VI drops in November. September 15 can't get here fast enough.

Biggest Disappointment / Miss
Hollywood Stuntman — Saber Interactive
Look, the Knight Rider and Back to the Future tie-ins are kind of fun on paper. A stunt driver game on movie sets is a genuinely novel concept. But this trailer landed with a thud between heavy hitters and the energy just didn't match the room. The show built serious momentum, and this felt like a speed bump. Still watching — but the bar it set for itself is high and the trailer didn't clear it.
Wild Card / Sleeper Pick
Kemuri
Nobody was talking about this one going in. That's exactly what makes it stand out. A title that lets you become a Yokai hunter, either alone or with friends, is a very interesting concept. In a show full of franchise IP and brand-name titles, Kemuri landed quietly and left people with genuine questions — which is actually the best thing a new announcement can do. Put this on your radar before the internet catches up. This is the one we'll be revisiting next year and saying we saw it coming.

The GZ Verdict
The Full Picture
What makes this State of Play notable isn't just any one announcement — it's the sheer density of the fall 2026 calendar Sony just assembled in a single showcase. Wolverine on September 15. Silent Hill: Townfall on September 24. Control: Resonant the same week. Ace Combat 8 in October. Onimusha in September. That's a stacked back half of the year that puts real pressure on every other platform and publisher.
The PS5-exclusive commitment for Wolverine is the most strategically significant move Sony has made in years. After half a decade of eventually porting everything to PC, drawing that line in the sand — right before GTA VI and right at the start of the console's commercial prime — is a statement. Whether it holds long-term is a separate question. Right now, it's working as a platform argument, and that matters heading into the biggest fall gaming season in recent memory.
God of War: Laufey got people hyped immediately. The God of War brand has serious search volume behind it, and just having a new entry in that universe — even without a release window — is enough to move the needle. Same with Until Dawn 2, which lands in 2027 but proves Sony is still investing in its horror-adjacent lineup.

The question heading into Xbox's June 7 showcase: can Microsoft match this energy? Asha Sharma has been rebuilding Xbox piece by piece — the Game Pass price cut, the return to Xbox branding, Project Helix on the horizon. But Sony just put 18 games on a board and dared the competition to respond. The Chop Shop will have the full Xbox breakdown same day, June 7.
